The Unsurmountable

We all in our lives have goals and don’t know how to achieve them. However, what is much more notable is that we put the unsurmountable in front of us.

What I mean by the unsurmountable is that we put these monolithic tasks in front of us, preventing even a first step on the road toward the things we want in our lives.

These insurmountables take many forms, “I can’t ask that person out until I lose 50 pounds.” Or  “I can’t look for a new job until I’ve got a degree.” or  “I need to get the kids out of the house before I start my new business.” or “I need to save $*** before I can even think about looking for a house.” “I need to finish the project I’m already on before taking on the one I want to do.” And many, many others.

And believe me, I am a champion of using the unsurmountable, preventing me from tackling even the most minor goals over time where I lived. “How much money I have.” “I need to lose weight.” “I’m not ready.” “I’ve got plenty of time.” And my favorite, “I can’t do anything until I’ve dealt with my past.” These are just some of the unsurmountables that I have in my life that I struggle with constantly.

Inevitably what they genuinely are, are delay tactics. So, getting past them is most important in achieving anything in your life. Because if we allow them to block progress, we can’t accomplish the goals we want.

So, if I were to imagine an unsurmountable to me, it looks like a giant boulder sitting directly in front of me blocking the path. The trick would seem to be getting around it, but often we feel like there’s a cliff on one side and a wall on the other. There’s no way to climb over the damn thing. So how do we go further down the path?

The key sometimes is finding another path. Another is figuring out how you might chip away at it. Who knows, you might just be able to roll that boulder off the cliff? You can’t know until you give it a push.

Finding another path may look like instead of needing to save X number of $$. Try another way. Use what you have now, or even take on a partner to get started. Chipping is simply just taking a baby step towards one of those goals. Do you want that new house? Go check one out. Or just merely try; who knows, you might just be able to move that boulder.

No one is going to hand you what you want in life simply. You’ve got to go out and look for it, strive for it, and grasp it. And often, it’s much easier to obtain than you think. The biggest obstacles in our lives are our minds. Luckily, we can change them. It only needs some practice.

Most of the time, these unsurmountables that we create in our lives are not really so unsurmountable. So, let’s call them what they are ‘excuses.’ We all have them, we all hate them, we all deal with them all the time. Not to mention its cousin indecision, which is one of my favorites. “I could do that, but what if?” Or “I don’t know if I want to.” As Jimmy Buffett once said, “indecision may or may not be my problem.”

Few good tools that can be used to cut through the chatter of indecision are making a pro-con list or something I call a verbal declaration. We all know what a pro-con is, and it can be instrumental in making a choice. The one thing I do warn you about in using one is to make your entries on either side very specific.

The verbal declaration technique is as follows. Relax, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. Then state each of your choices out loud clearly and concisely. As you do so notice how you feel. Which part of your body responds. Is it easier to say one statement or the other? This process will often give you a keen insight into the decision you’re trying to make.

All of this in conclusion all adds up to one thing. Action, you have to take action towards your goal. In staying still, you cannot achieve anything you must have movement. Even a small step forward, even if you are then dealt a setback and put back to where you were. It was still action and you gained knowledge if nothing else and your next step will be better. Also, there is a cosmic law called entropy that is always a part of the universe. Which means everything is always deteriorating. So just trying to keep things the way they are in your life, you will end up slipping.

With one last thing to note, it’s okay to ask for help. I personally have struggled deeply with this. Ask yourself this: would you help someone else if they ask for your help? Of course, you would. In fact, you would most likely love to. So, in you asking for help your giving someone else a gift. And also asking spirit for help. The universe is abundant with energy and exists to help you all you need to do is ask for it.

In conclusion I believe that the unsurmountables are not always so unsurmountable. So, in life we just need to try, act, and learn. And in doing these things we find our greatest goals, our best skills, and our greatest happiness.
